The Owls had multiple team sessions and also continued to focus on special teams work and unit drills.
Jaquez Johnson found both DeAndre Richardson and Jenson Stoshak for big gains in the next to last team session of the morning practice. The Owls broke for lunch and meetings and returned to the field for the 6:30 p.m. practice.
The evening practice saw William Dukes and Lucky Whitehead have receptions for big gains included a closely guarded catch by Dukes that drew praise from the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, D'Joun Smith continues to press the receivers and cause havoc for the quarterbacks.
When asked about the quarterbacks and who is setting themselves apart, Head Coach Carl Pelini continued to praise them as a unit.
"The quarterbacks are athletic and allow us to be creative, that's what a spread offense does," said Pelini. "Today was a day for experimenting some everywhere. We want the best athletes on the field."
Some of the creativity comes from early summer ideas by the coaches and what was proven on the scrimmage tape.
"At times, we looked fast, even as dead legged as we are right now," said Pelini about last Saturday's scrimmage. "The `O' line worked well, communicated and their calls were good. On defense, we lined up and were in better position than we were at this time last year."
