Following the Wednesday evening session, Head Coach Carl Pelini evaluated the nightcap as fast. An assessment that rings true, especially when compared to the pace of practice a year ago and that was billed as up-tempo.
The biggest adjustment is the players understanding and knowledge of the expectations between year one with the new staff and year two. The coaches also are more familiar with the personnel and now have the opportunity to insert more players spelling veteran players who are familiar with the system.
The majority of the veteran players can be found on the defensive side of the ball and both Wednesday practices showed that strength. Linebacker Andrae Kirk picked up a fumble in the first evening team session. Defensive back D'Joun Smith broke up a pass and later had a pick six. And fellow DB Winfred Strickland grabbed a deflected ball to end the practice and break-up and offensive score.
The offense had highlights as well. Jaquez Johnson found Damian Fortner out of the backfield to move the chains, early in the day and quarterback Melvin German ran one in for a score in the second practice.
