Basketball Wins Opener
The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team kicked off its 2013-14 season with an 86-51 trouncing of Ave Maria University on Friday night.
The Owls (1-0) raced out to a 17-2 lead and never looked back, maintaining a comfortable margin the entire night. Richard Morrow punctuated the first half with a fierce dunk to put the Owls up 44-23 at the break, led by Jackson Trapp's 18 points. Trapp ended the night with a career high 23 points.
FAU shot 51.5 percent from the floor in the first half, compared to just 40.4 for Ave Maria. The Owls' lead grew to as many as 37 points in the second half, as FAU continued to shoot the ball well from the perimeter. The Owls also outrebounded the smaller Gyrenes on the night 52-29.
The win is FAU's first in a season opener since the 2010-11 season. Pablo Bertone had 16 points and eight rebounds and Morrow (12), Marquan Botley (12) and Javier Lacunza (11) all scored in double figures.
The Owls are back in action on Monday night when they host St. Francis at 7 p.m. In honor of Veterans' Day, all active duty, reserve and retired members of the military will receive five dollar admission to the game.
