September 5, 2013FAU Volleyball Sweeps Bethune-Cookman in FAU Invitational
The Florida Atlantic University volleyball team completed action at the FAU Invitational with a straight set (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) victory over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.
The Owls (2-1) used an 11-0 run to rally from a six-point deficit midway through the first set to take a 25-17 victory. Brianne Wojciakowski recorded four of her six kills on the day during the run. FAU held a 14-9 lead early in set number two, but the Wildcats rallied to tie the set at 14. The Owls never managed a lead of more than three the rest of the way, but managed to hold on for a 25-22 win.
FAU got out to a fast start in the third set, taking an early 7-0 lead. BCU was unable to get within six points the rest of the way and the Owls clinched the win 25-17. Jennifer St. Sume and Alessia Pizzoccheri were named to the All-Tournament Team for FAU.
The Owls will travel to Jacksonville next weekend to participate in the JU Invitational. Action begins for FAU on Friday when they play Mississippi Valley State and North Florida at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.
Men's Soccer Ends Season Opener at UCF in Scoreless Tie
Freshman Theo Jamilloux Makes Collegiate Debut as Starting Goalkeeper
The Florida Atlantic University men's soccer team battled UCF to a 0-0 draw in its season opener Friday night.
The Owls' Theo Jamilloux made his collegiate debut as starting goalkeeper. The freshman tallied six saves over the 110 minutes of play while UCF goalkeeper Sebastian Evers recorded one.
FAU's offense compiled five shots from five different players, including returning seniors Joachim Hansteen and Martin Nesic.
The in-state rivals have often produced a challenging matchup, ending in a scoreless draw previously when the Owls hosted the Knights in 2009.
Florida Atlantic will be back in action on Sunday afternoon in its first home game of the season against the University of Massachusetts Lowell at 1 p.m.
FAU Women's Basketball Hires Sophia Witherspoon as Director of Operations
Florida Atlantic University women's basketball coach Kellie Lewis-Jay announced today that Sophia Witherspoon has been hired as director of operations. Witherspoon is a former University of Florida and WNBA standout.
"We are extremely excited to have Sophia Witherspoon join our women's basketball program," said Lewis-Jay. "She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience which will be very beneficial to our student athletes. I couldn't ask for a better fit for our family."
Witherspoon played basketball for UF from 1988-91. She finished her Gator career as the sixth all-time leading scorer with 1,381 points. A first team All-SEC selection as a senior, Witherspoon also excelled in the classroom. The Office of Student Life at UF created an academic award in her honor following her graduation. The Sophia Witherspoon Award for Overall Excellence is presented each semester to two individuals who exemplify the positive attitude and strong work ethic in the classroom that they display on the playing field. She was inducted into the UF Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
Witherspoon was drafted by the New York Liberty in the 1997 WNBA Draft and played in the league for seven seasons. Witherspoon scored 2,219 points and racked up 449 rebounds in her career.
The Owls went 12-17 last season, but will return four starters and eight players for their first season in Conference USA.
